Good-humoured nun Sister Mary Alban Bouchard devoted her life to peace

Toronto Star, Sept. 16, 2013 — For Sister Mary Alban Bouchard, on a 1978 trip to New York for a UN special session on disarmament, it was meeting the Hibakusha — the survivors of the American atomic bombs dropped on Japan — that made her a fierce proponent for peace.

Jubilarians 2013: Looking Back Over 70 Years

Sister Jean De Luca
I was born in Toronto and grew up in St. Patrick’s parish. My years of ministry as a Sister of St. Joseph were either directly or indirectly related to education. For many years, I was a teacher at the elementary, secondary and later at the post-secondary levels. During a five year period, I was involved in addiction research programmes in Toronto and Ottawa. This included individual and family counselling.

Sister Margaret Feeley
It was a memorable day — September 7, 1952 — when I said my goodbyes to family and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph. I had attended the Nursing School at St. Michael's Hospital for one year and after my making my first vows, I was missioned to St. Michael's Hospital to complete my nursing training. After graduation, my next ministry was at our Infirmary at St. Joseph's-on-the-Lake, where I was enriched by the lives of faithfulness and prayer of our senior Sisters and the teachers who lived there.

Jubilarians 2013: Looking Back Over 50 Years

Sister Pat Boucher
As I celebrate 50 years as a Sister of St. Joseph, I have so much for which I am grateful. I think of special moments on retreats when I was touched with a deep knowledge of God’s presence living with me and speaking to me through the gifts of nature and of people sustaining me and giving me energy for our mission of nurturing community wherever we are.
