Honouring a Very Special Visitor

The Retired Teachers’ Association of Ontario has recently honoured Margaret Durkin of Oshawa, an Associate with the Holy Family Associate Community.

After a varied and distinguished teaching career, which brought with it many awards, Margaret Durkin retired in 1990 and immediately became active in the Retired Teachers' Association. She has held many offices but is best known for her work with the Goodwill Committee, a group that maintains contact with retired teachers living in retirement or nursing homes. Margaret's particular interest has been the ‘over 90s.’

Celebration of a New/Old Rite

The Rite of Consecration to a Life of Virginity dates back to the fourteenth century. Revived by Vatican II, but still not well known in today's church, the rite was celebrated for Mary Huan, a CSJ associate, at Epiphany of Our Lord parish on Saturday, June 28 during a Eucharistic liturgy. Most Reverend John A. Boissonneau, Auxiliary Bishop of Toronto, presided at the liturgy and received Mary's vow. Christopher Iredale CSB and Domenico Rettura CFIC were the concelebrating priests.

CSJ Associates’ Leadership Make History

April 13, 2008 was a special day for CSJ Sisters and Associates.  Not only was it the annual commitment day for the CSJ Associates, it was also the historic day when the leadership of the CSJ Associates was handed over from the Sisters to the Associates themselves.  The members of the new leadership team are pictured right (front, l-r: Eva Bowman, Carole Sauvé, Director, Mary Duffy; back: Ursula Matthews, Shannon-Lee Maguire, Assistant Director).

The Spirituality of Friendship

Instead of the expected rain, a bright sunny day greeted 70 CSJ Associates as they gathered for the commitment retreat on April 13, 2008 in the auditorium at St. Joseph’s Convent, Morrow Park.  Everyone looked forward eagerly to the day whose theme, The Spirituality of Friendship, would be presented by Sister Virginia Varley CSJ, gifted facilitator, leader, artist, and spiritual director (pictured at right).

Reflections on Leadership

For the past eight years, Sister Roberta Freeman has been Director of CSJ Associates. She is pictured below, speaking at an Associate retreat. Leadership of the Associates is passing to the Associates themselves on April 13, 2008.  Sister Mary Buckley asked Sister Roberta to reflect on her experience — their exchange follows…

How did you come to take on the position of Director of CSJ Associates?
