Job Posting: Administrator & Director of Care

The successful candidate will direct the operations of the Sisters' residence including healthcare, personnel, food and facilities services in accordance with the mission, values and philosophy of care of the Sisters of St. Joseph to meet the needs of the Sisters as identified by the Local Leader.

Overview

The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto’s residence at 2 O’Connor Drive is home to 58 Sisters who are members of the Congregation. The residence includes 22 units for assisted living and 35 infirmary units providing 24/7 nursing for long term, rehabilitation, convalescent and palliative care. The infirmary is operated under the Private Hospitals Act.

The role of the Administrator & Director of Care is to support the Local Leader, a Sister whose ministry is to ensure that the emotional, spiritual, social and physical needs of the Sisters in the residence are met. Reporting to the Congregational Leader, the Administrator & Director provides oversight of and direction for the staff at the residence, ensuring all regulatory requirements are met, resources are deployed effectively, the Congregation’s Philosophy of Care is upheld, and a home-like atmosphere is maintained. 

Through direct reports and the support of corporate services, the Administrator & Director is responsible for health care services (nursing, allied health, life enrichment and other care services), personal services (transportation, clothing, volunteers), food services (dietician, food production, congregational event catering) and facilities services (reception, maintenance, technology, housekeeping, security, grounds, support for congregational events).

The preferred candidate may have experience in the administration of a long-term care operation, retirement home, or complex continuing care facility. Ideally you have a nursing background, and preparation at the Masters level is advantageous. You are energized by the opportunity to be of service to a distinguished religious congregation of women.

While the health care dimension is significant, above all, the residence is, as the name implies, home for the community of Sisters living at 2 O’Connor Drive.

Reporting and Relationship

The Administrator & Director of Care reports to the Congregational Leader and will meet with the Leadership Team as required while also working in collaboration with the Local Leader, providing support as required.

The following staff reports to the Administrator & Director of Care: 

  • Director, Domestic Service
  • Manager, Care Centre
  • Manager, Life Enrichment
  • Manager, Building Operations
  • Allied Health Professionals
  • Executive Assistant

Key Responsibilities

The Administrator & Director shall:

  • Be responsible to the Leadership Team for the organization and management of the residence in accordance with policies and subject to direction of the Leadership Team
  • Be responsible for the direct and actual superintendence and charge of the Infirmary and perform the role of “superintendent” as mandated by the Act with respect to the Infirmary
  • Consult regularly with the Local Leader to ensure appropriate systems, structures and programs are in place to meet the needs of the Sisters 
  • Solicit input and feedback from the Sisters, staff and local leader concerning programs
  • Develop, review and make recommendations based on best practices for new programs, program expansion or changes and evaluate programs on an ongoing basis
  • Promote, liaise, co-operate and co-ordinate services/programs with community agencies and other service and health care providers 
  • Ensure the organizational structure supports accountability of all departments and staff for fulfilling the goals and objectives of the residence
  • Establish a work environment conducive to team development 
  • Ensure ongoing programs for leadership and professional development for all staff
  • Ensure effective personnel planning and identify resource implications
  • Encourage and support the interdisciplinary team approach for the care of the Sisters
  • Prepare an annual capital and operating budget for the residence in collaboration with the Local Leader and management team members and evaluate the financial performance of the overall operation and budget adherence on an ongoing basis
  • Make recommendations regarding the purchase of clinical, program and facilities equipment
  • Ensure a healthy and safe environment for Sisters, staff and visitors 
  • Foster the values, culture and philosophy of the Congregation
  • Represent the residence and/or Infirmary externally to the community, government, media, and other organizations and agencies as directed by the Leadership Team
  • Perform such other duties as directed from time to time

Qualifications 

Education

  • Ideally a B.Sc.N. and a Certificate of Competency from the College of Nurses of Ontario, or in the alternative, a background compatible with the requirements of the Private Hospitals Act 
  • Ideally, preparation at the Masters level or credentials related to administration 

Experience

  • A minimum of five (5) years directing care units (long term care, assisted-living, complex continuing care, rehabilitation, palliative care) in one or more settings 
  • Experience managing support and administrative functions
  • Accountability for an operating budget (> $2 million) and a related capital equipment/facility-related budget, is a pre-requisite 
  • Oversight of an interdisciplinary team is required, accompanied by a positive engagement history with physicians 
  • A thorough working knowledge of the regulatory environment and professional practice standards applicable to the Infirmary is expected
