Reflection & Prayer for International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

In a resolution in December 1994, the United Nations’ General Assembly decided that the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples shall be observed on August 9 every year.

Last year marked the 10th Anniversary of the adoption of the U.N.’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. This year, this day will be commemorated all over the world. It is particularly significant for Canadians in light of the ongoing work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
People of Indigenous origin comprise less than 5% of the world’s population but account for 15% of the poorest. They speak an overwhelming majority of the world’s estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures.
In this time of growing consciousness of climate change, the world’s Indigenous people remind us of our need to increase our mindfulness of the fragility of our global environment. This awareness can be assisted by turning to God in our search for an increase in wisdom.

Let us pray

Source of all Wisdom, give us the insight, energy and the resources to implement the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in a timely basis. We pray to the Lord, Lord hear our prayer…
Lord of all Power, we pray for reconciliation between Indigenous peoples and all those of us who are more recent arrivals on this land formerly called “Turtle Island” and now called Canada. We pray to the Lord, Lord hear our prayer…
O God of Justice, we know that the pursuit of righteousness is the pursuit of justice. We pray for justice in our relationships with all your people for we are all children of the same Creator God. We pray to the Lord, Lord hear our prayer…
O God of Courage, we pray for the courage to be our best selves and to give our best selves, to be allies to those who are most in need of friendship and support as they adjust to new situations in their lives. We pray to the Lord, Lord hear our prayer…
Creator God, we pray that all of us together will respect and care for this fragile Earth you have gifted to us — the land, rock, soil resources under the ground, the rivers, lakes, oceans and water of which we are made. The very environment in which we live is in need of healing and our loving care. We pray to the Lord, Lord hear our prayer…
May our hearts always beat as one with Yours, dear God, through your great Messenger, Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
