CSJ Associates’ Annual Assembly Day 2018

On March 3, 2018, 48 Associates and Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto gathered at 2 O’Connor Drive for the CSJ Associates’ Annual Assembly Day.

The topics for the day were:
  • Living Well to the End, presented by our very own Associate, Theresa Franco, M. Div., Pastoral Care at the Sisters’ residence.
  • Complementary Therapy Approaches in Palliative Care, presented by Sr. Marianne Tavares, RSCJ.
Theresa presented many important points that would allow us to deeply live out our commitment as Associates. We created our own self-care plan for how to live well which included forgiveness and looking at relationships.
In addition, we created a ‘bucket list’ while listening to the song Live Like You Were Dying by Tim McGraw. Living fully is engaging the Gospel to love one another, to care for the Earth and to be involved in outreach.
Theresa pointed out that the Earth is primary because it can survive without us. We are secondary as we need the Earth to survive. She referred to the heritage writings of the Sisters which we shared. Her hope was that we would listen, awaken and feel the love of God embracing us.
In the afternoon, we were treated to a talk by guest speaker Sr. Marianne Tavares, RSCJ. She holds a Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Counselling and certifications in massage, aromatherapy, reiki and hypnotherapy.
Sr. Marianne presented the concept of complementary therapy which is practised alongside conventional medicine. It aims to improve overall well-being by supporting the link between mind, body and spirit. Sr. Marianne introduced us to touch therapy (gentle massage) using essential oils. We gave each other a quick massage on our forearms. It was practical and easy to apply to ourselves and others. It is beneficial to palliative patients as a method of relaxation.
Our outreach to outside organizations was also a success. Thank you to all who contributed to our beneficiaries this year. We collected $400 for The Refuge, a shelter providing youth who are homeless with meals, personal care supplies and direct support programs. We also assembled a big basket of toiletries for St. Clare Residence which provides transitional housing for women in crisis.
Truly, we had a very enriching day!
