CSJ Associates' Commitment Day

On April 22, 2017, 49 spirited Associates came together for our Annual Commitment Retreat organized by the St. Joseph and St. Jude Communities.

We were privileged to have Sister Virginia Varley as our guest speaker. Sister inspired us to ask ourselves what it meant to be an Associate, and had us share our thoughts in an ingenious and creative manner.

When all was said and done, a clothesline that spanned the length of the Congregation Room at 2 O’Connor displayed similar sentiments: community, empathy, shared prayer, service and inspiration were but a few. Like the Sisters of St. Joseph, we realized that we all strive to answer God’s call to reach out in love to the dear neighbor. Two Associates are celebrating their 35th year to this calling.

Theresa Franco, Associate, recalls that, “As Associates, we truly live the charism of Love of God and the dear neighbour. We are united at a very deep level and there is a strong sense of belonging.”

After a delicious lunch, we were welcomed in the chapel by Sister Thérèse Meunier, Congregational Leader. We celebrated the Mass, presided by Father Roger Yaworski, SJ. Seventy Sisters, Associates and guests came together to hear the continued call to service.

Sister Thérèse, together with Barbara Baptista and Mary Huan, Associates Co-Directors, led the commitment ceremony. Five first commitments were made along with the remaining Associates present recommitting to live the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

For the first time, the Associates in Prayer renewed their commitment. Prior to the Commitment Day, they received reflective questions and expressed their desire to renew their commitment through their coordinators. A name card for each Associate in Prayer was created and displayed in front of the altar. Barbara and Mary renewed the commitment for them with Sister Thérèse. It was a very touching ritual.

Eva Bowman completed the ceremony by thanking Father Roger Yaworski SJ for presiding over the Mass, Stefan Fehr and Andrew Kwan, cantor and organist, respectively, and all the Sisters of St. Joseph for their continued support of the Associates. The day came to an end after a lovely reception in the foyer of sweets, fruits and drinks.
