Faith Connections: A Spiritual Experience
From the Fall 2015 issue of Springs of Hope:
When John-Paul Markides joined Faith Connections staff as Interim Program Director, he was impressed by their approach to young adult ministry. “I was amazed to see how Faith Connections helps young adults encounter Christ without imposing that experience,” says John-Paul.
In his role, John-Paul organizes numerous activities and outings. One event was Christ and Culture, held at Ripley’s Aquarium. During this event, the group explored marine exhibits, periodically stopping to meditate on the life of the oceans and God’s role in their creation. They were guided by meditation guidebooks that the Faith Connections team had prepared in advance. Another event, Hike and Prayer, has hiking interspersed with prayer on the sights and surroundings.
“We try to show young adults something beautiful in the everyday world, be it a museum, a park or something else,” says John-Paul. “Then we offer them a theological lens with which to see it from a spiritual perspective. Our hope is that young adults leave our events and continue to see Christ in the world around them.”
John-Paul is finishing his Master of Divinity degree, and he is grateful for his time with Faith Connections. “I’ve had a real experience of community and ministry from this role, and it’s been a chance to show people the presence of God in art, nature and so much more.”
