Fontbonne Place: Joining a Community
When Margo first accepted one of Fontbonne Ministries' 18 rent-geared-to-income apartments at Fontbonne Place, she hadn’t seen her new home. “I thought it’d be a one-room apartment,” she says. She was stunned to find that the Fontbonne Place apartments for single, older women each held a bedroom, a bathroom, a kitchen and a living room.
“I walked in and I was so amazed to see the sun shining in through the back and to have space to put large, cheerful pictures on the walls. I felt like I had gone to heaven.”
She was also surprised to find that after moving in, she had become part of a community. “With Mustard Seed next door, there’s so much to get involved in.” She participates in many programs including the computer program and the community kitchen. “All of a sudden, I had so many activities and friends.” She is also very taken with the community garden. “The morning glories are beautiful and I’m looking forward to planting carrots this year.”
Heather, another Fontbonne Place resident, has found the garden to be a bonding experience. Her neighbours introduced her to planting seeds. “I’d never planted anything from a tiny seed before. I didn’t know when to harvest plants, but they taught me how, and then I had 25 cucumbers and seeds to plant next year.” She shared her cucumbers with her neighbours. “I love how everyone here is so supportive and there’s so much diversity in what we can do.”
