Since 1992, the Catholic Church has celebrated World Day of the Sick on Feb. 11, Feast of Lady of Lourdes.
On this day:
- the ill are encouraged to reflect on the Christian meaning of suffering,
- all persons who work in health care and serve as caregivers stop to recall the roots of their healing mission and
- all Christians are invited to reflect on and respond to human suffering.
To quote from the text of a poster prepared for this day by the Centre de pastoral de la santé and Eglise Catholique de Quebec and called Remember Me:
“… Our lives are not lost
Even if we can no longer find the way.
Help us to understand
That you did not come to take away suffering
But rather to live it, and to fill it with your presence
And in doing so, become ever so much closer to us.”
