Honouring a Very Special Visitor
The Retired Teachers’ Association of Ontario has recently honoured Margaret Durkin of Oshawa, an Associate with the Holy Family Associate Community.
After a varied and distinguished teaching career, which brought with it many awards, Margaret Durkin retired in 1990 and immediately became active in the Retired Teachers' Association. She has held many offices but is best known for her work with the Goodwill Committee, a group that maintains contact with retired teachers living in retirement or nursing homes. Margaret's particular interest has been the ‘over 90s.’
Each member receives a Christmas card and a birthday card; Marg has even planned and attended three hundredth-birthday celebrations. Realizing that February is a dreary month, she enlisted the help of her sister to deliver almost 80 plants for Valentine's Day. For many she was their only visitor.
And so when the provincial office asked for nominations, District 28 was pleased and proud to nominate Margaret, who was honoured last week with the Distinguished Members' Award for outstanding contribution at the provincial district level. Congratulations Margaret, and thank you!
