Celebration at Our Lady of Mercy

On Nov. 29, 2006, St. Joseph's Health Centre hosted an event in celebration of more than eighty years of service to the community of Our Lady of Mercy Wing. Prior to their merger in 1980, Our Lady of Mercy Hospital stood on its own, next to St. Joseph's, both in the charge of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto.

President and CEO Ken Deane extended a welcome to the more than 150 former staff in attendance. Sister Marcella Iredale, former Executive Director of the hospital, offered the opening prayer which was followed by an address by Sister Mary Carmen MacLean, Spiritual and Religious Care, entitled "Historical Overview of Our Lady of Mercy and the Sisters of St. Joseph." Dr. Sylvia Kennedy, a staff physician for 37 years, reminisced about patients who had touched her life over her years of service.

In his remarks, Ken Deane announced the impending demolition of the present building which is to be replaced by a new patient care wing, Our Lady of Mercy Wing. He then invited those present to continue the "hugging and greeting those they hadn't seen in years and who hadn't changed a bit!"
