The Spirit of Giving

“I wanted to do something more than our usual Mass on Sunday at St. Joseph’s College,” said Justin Jalea, director of the University of St. Michael’s Liturgical Choir. “ I proposed it to the choir, they agreed and we all set to work.” The result was a concert called “The Spirit of Giving” held on March 3, 2006, a benefit for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto’s mission in Haiti.

Twenty-one young men and women raised their voices, presenting a lively and varied program that included “Siyahamba,” a Zulu song, Mozart’s “Ave Verum” and a Negro spiritual “Were you There.” A string quartet also performed. In the audience were Monsignor Barret Armstrong and Miss Kay Mann, well known to anyone connected with St. Michael’s College Choir.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Sisters of St. Joseph who exemplify what it is to give of oneself without expecting anything in return,” wrote Justin in the printed program. Through the concert, the choir raised over $800.00.

Sr. Anne Marie Marrin, Dean of St. Joseph’s College, thanked the choir for their wonderful effort on behalf of the Sisters of St. Joseph. She then invited all present to have refreshments.
