Women's Drop-In Centre Reopens

Five months ago, few of us had heard of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). In time we became aware that strong action was necessary to fight its outbreak.

Because we are located in the West Annex Building of St. Michael's Hospital on Shuter Street and access to the hospital was restricted due to the SARS directives, the Women's Drop-In Centre was closed for five months.

During our time of closure, the other day programmes in the downtown area continued to operate and to provide safety and welcome. Still the staff and volunteers awaited patiently and anticipated eagerly the day when the door to the Women's Drop-In Centre would once again be open to welcome the many women we have come to know and to care for.

On Wednesday, May 21, 2003, the Drop-In Centre received clearance to re-open on Monday, May 26, 2003. However, on Thursday May 22, what is known as the outbreak of SARS 2 occurred. Thus began another long period of waiting and uncertainty as to when the Women's Drop-In Centre would be up and running.

Three months later, the long awaited day finally dawned. On Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, the Drop-In Centre re-opened! As we experience the joy of being open again, and see and hear the expressions of gratitude of the women and the volunteers — yes, even a single rose from one woman — assures us of the meaning and the need of our presence in the Women's Drop-In Centre!
