“Now he showed how perfect his love was. He got up and taking a towel, wrapped it round his waist; he then poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel... ‘I have given you an example...’” (John 13)
The account in the Gospel today is a scene to be entered into. Imagine yourself there among the twelve. Let your eyes follow the movements of Jesus as he rises from table. He comes to you with the basin and kneels before you. Then he removes your sandal and lifts your foot into the warm water. These strong hands are human hands. They are the hands of a carpenter. They are ministering hands. They are the hands that will reach out bread to you so that you may be joined to Jesus Christ, God's most dear Son. You feel the urge to protest because it is humbling to be handled so gently by God, but remain silent and know what is being done to you. Then go and do the same. Minister to the others. Wash their soiled feet by forgiving them their offences.
Jesus, your love is perfect. Your hands are holy. Touch me.For other prayers, see this page
