What is the meaning of this strange story? Why did Jesus do this? He allowed the three who were with him to have a glimpse of his true glory. He did it as a promise: no matter what happens, no matter how bad things become, remember this moment and take courage.
We, too, have moments of transfiguration, moments of such startling beauty that we are struck dumb, changed forever. What are the special moments in your life? Your wedding day, the birth of your child, an unforgettable sunset, a quiet day with a good friend... It is good to rest in such memories every so often for, like the apostles, there are times when we need courage.
Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings
- Luke 9:33
Yes, we would all like to stay in the great moments. But, like Peter, James and John, we must get on with living. Those special moments are given to buoy us up when things are difficult, to remind us of the God who is always with us, to bring comfort but also the strength to live on.
